Wheelchairs and more

Kinds of wheelchairs:

Wheelchairs require expert fitting to the needs and abilities of the patients.

Standard Wheelchairs
Mostly used for mobility inside buildings - used by 85% of the disabled population. It is propelled by hand or by being pushed by another person. It uses 'muscle-power' and is a good short-time solution as well as being the cheapest kind.

Standard Lightweight Wheelchairs
Used for home or in-patient use with extended usability options for positioning and seating of the patient as well as being a possible wheelchair for outside use.

Multi-functional Wheelchairs
High individualization capabilities for seating, customizable wheel positions, arm rests, head rests, back positioning, advanced break system, multi-position leg rests, low total weight and high maveuverability - all in a more attractive look.

Additional Motor for Mechanical Wheelchairs
Higher mobility with littler strain. Going uphill is no problem anymore. One motor each is located near the axle of each wheel. The wheelchair is still operated like a 'normal' wheelchair but highly sensible sensors pick up any movement and translate it to the motors that power the wheels accordingly. The motor amplifies the power of the user for 'driving' as well as breaking. When driving downhill the motors automatically reduce the speed and recharge the batteries.

Electric Wheelchairs
An electric wheelchair is issued when the user cannot operate a standard wheelchair by himself. Ideal for the assurance of mobility at home, at work or travelling. Speed, maneuverability and acceleration is programmable and done in coinjunction with the capabilities of the user. Electric wheelchairs have a reach of up to 70 km.

Wheelchair Measurements
The basic measurements of the wheelchair are directly related to the body measurements of the user. Width of the seat is measured by using the width of the users pelvis plus 2 cm, length of the seat is measured by the length of the thigh minus 3 cm. Choosing the heigth of the seat depends on the length of the lower leg and the ground clearance. Heigth of the backrest is chosen as low as possible while being as high as neccessary. Heigth of the torso, overall condition, position of lesion and torsal stability and thickness of seat cussion are among other important factors.
